A Beginner’s Guide to Boat Maintenance
Your boat provides you with plenty of fun out on the water, so it only makes sense that you should give it some TLC in return. Regular maintenance will ensure that you aren’t stranded on the lake with a broken engine or a technical malfunction that you could have addressed on the shore. If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to maintaining your boat, read this guide created by the fine folks at Texas Malibu.
Washing
One of the easiest and most essential ways you can care for your boat is to regularly wash it. This is especially important if you take your boat out on the sea, as salt can chip away at the paint and degrade various parts of your vessel. You’ll want to use a marine boat wash and soft-bristle brush so you can thoroughly clean your craft without rubbing off the paint or scratching the hull. Clean in smaller sections so you can wash off the soap before it dries.
You’ll also want to apply a fresh coat of wax twice every season to keep that protective coating in tip-top shape. If you store your boat over the cold months, apply a fresh coat of wax before you put it in storage and then after you take it out.
Upholstery and Vinyl
Your upholstery and vinyl can be easy to forget but can be costly to repair if you let them deteriorate. Even if your seats are built to last, you’ll still want to spend the extra time caring for them. Use a sponge and mild, soapy water with a quick rinse to keep your seats clean. Avoid using harsh cleaners like bleach and ammonia as they can wear away at the material if used excessively.
Oil Changes
We highly recommend checking the oil before every use. Top it off as needed, and if you notice the oil is looking dark or sludgy, it’s time for an oil change. If you’re unsure how to do this, or you need help, we highly recommend taking your boat to a professional to avoid any damage.
Propeller Inspection
Another important check you’ll want to do before every trip out is checking the propeller. Make sure the engine is off and remove the propeller using a deep well socket. Clear away any debris you may find, but be mindful of fishing line or obvious propeller damage.
