Checklist Before Boating
Here at Texas Malibu, we take the safety of our customers very seriously. We want you to be as well prepared as possible should the worst happen. That is why our experts have put together this list of essential items to pack to ensure a safe boat trip.
Essential Items To Pack
Safety items are tools and equipment meant to help minimize your risk of injury should something go wrong. They include:
- Enough life jackets for every passenger
- A throwable personal flotation device (like a ring or cushion) in case someone falls overboard
- A visual distress signal (like a flare) to signal for help
- A fire extinguisher
- A first aid kit to treat injuries
- An anchor to keep you rooted in place so that the rescue crew has an easier time finding you
You may also need to perform emergency maintenance on your boat, in which case a toolkit and compatible spare parts will be helpful. Don’t forget to take along some extra fuel, just in case. Finally, you’ll need a way to find your way back should you get lost, so don’t forget to bring:
- A compass
- A GPS with spare batteries
- A chart of the area
Having extra food, water, and clothing in case of emergencies is also a good idea.
Prepare For Safe Towing
A safe boating trip starts with safe towing. First, check your tow vehicle’s weight limit, and make sure that the combined weight of your boat, trailer, passengers, and supplies do not exceed that limit. We recommend checking the fluid levels and tire pressure as well. A quick test drive to test the lights, brakes, and handling can’t hurt either.
Prepare For A Safe Boat Trip
Make sure that your passengers are aware of any relevant safety procedures and follow basic safety practices like staying seated while the boat is in motion. It’s also important that everyone wear a properly fitting life jacket.
