Tackle Box Essentials for Your Boat
Fishing is a wonderful pastime with a long history and it’s the most fun and productive when it’s done from a boat. But when you head out into the middle of the lake or down your favorite river, you need to make sure you’ve got everything you need on hand to be successful. This includes a well-stocked tackle box filled with all the essentials. Below, we’ve listed some of the essentials you need to carry on your boat at all times in order to have a successful fishing excursion.
Bobbers
Otherwise known as “floaters,” bobbers let you know when you’ve snagged a fish on your line. The bobber sinks down into the water when a fish bites, letting you know that it’s time to reel them in. The standard bobber is a plastic red-and-white orb, but these don’t let you cast your line very deeply. Slip bobbers slide up and down your line so you can get your hook as deep as you want it. You can even use a piece of cork with a stick in it if you have nothing else to hand.
Lures
You need a way to lure in the fish and if you’re not using live bait, then you have to use lures. Carry minnow imitations, spinners, spoons, and top-water lures in your boat tackle box to ensure you can attract a variety of fish to your hook. It’s always good to be able to experiment to determine what lures work best.
Sinkers
These are simply weights that attach to your hook and lure since these items are lightweight and not likely to sink down of their own accord. Sinkers are used to weigh the hook down until it reaches the level where the fish are swimming. Carry several of them on your boat because it’s easy for them to come loose and sink to the bottom of the lake!
Extra Line
You’ll also want to carry some extra line with you on your boat, just in case your line snaps from being caught on a log or pulled by a fish. Bring a lightweight line as well as a heavyweight line for those bigger catches in rougher waters.
More Hooks
You never know when a fish will break away with your hook still in it or you catch your hook on something underwater. Bring extra hooks to make up for this and also include a variety of hooks so that you can be prepared for any type of fish you may encounter.
First-Aid Kit
Of course, you’ve got to have a way to address wounds and illnesses when you’re far from shore in your boat, so stock up a first-aid kit with the essentials. Recommended items for a tackle-box first-aid kit include bandages, gauze, waterproof medical tape, tweezers, nail clippers (which can also cut your line!), bug spray, sunscreen, antiseptic cream, petroleum jelly, painkillers and any necessary medications you or your fellow fishers need to have handy.
