Everyone loves a fun boat outing on a sunny day, but you have to be prepared for anything as a responsible boater. Packing your boat for a day on the water is essential to ensure you have everything you need for a safe and enjoyable outing. Here are some of the things you’ll want to remember so that you and your passengers have a pleasant trip.

1. Safety Gear

Make sure to pack all necessary safety equipment, including life jackets for everyone on board, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, and any other safety gear required by law. You’ll also need to have a throwable life ring on your boat in case someone falls overboard.

2. Navigation Tools

Bring a map or GPS device to help you navigate the waterways, as well as a compass in case your electronic devices fail.

3. Food & Water

Pack plenty of food and water for everyone on board, as well as snacks to keep you energized throughout the day. A cooler full of bottled water, soda cans, and juice boxes will keep everyone hydrated. You can pack easy-to-eat foods like granola bars, sandwiches, bags of chips, fresh fruit, and crackers.

4. Sun protection

Don't forget to pack sunscreen, hats, lip balm, sunglasses, and protective clothing to shield yourself from the sun's harmful rays. High-SPF and waterproof formulas are best.

5. Extra Clothing

Pack extra warm clothing in case you get wet or the weather changes unexpectedly. Spare sweaters, jackets, and socks are a must! It's always a good idea to bring a waterproof jacket or poncho as well.

6. Communication Devices

Bring a fully-charged cell phone or marine radio in case of emergencies or if you need to contact someone on shore. Battery-operated or hand-crank radios are good if you won’t have access to power.

7. Anchor & Docking Supplies

Make sure to pack an anchor and any necessary docking supplies to secure your boat when you stop for breaks or lunch. You’ll want to have an anchor that you find easy to use, along with dock lines or bungee cords for safely mooring your boat.

8. Personal Items

Remember to pack any personal items you may need, such as medications, camera, chargers, binoculars, or any other items specific to your outing. Remind your passengers to do the same.
