Wakesurfing is one of the more unique activities that you can enjoy in your wake surf boat. Like wakeboarders, wakesurfers are pulled behind the boat via a tow rope. However, once the vessel builds up speed, the wakesurfer drops the rope and rides the steep face below the wake’s peak. If wakesurfing sounds interesting to you and you’d like to give it a try, this guide from Texas Malibu can help you get started.

Gear Up

First, you’ll need to find the right gear. Besides just the wake surf boat, you’ll need a sturdy tow rope with a padded handle, a wetsuit, life jackets for everyone on the boat, and a board. Boards used for wakeboarding usually aren’t suitable for wakesurfing, so make sure that you have the right kind of board before you leave.

Finding Your Footing

You may be surprised that much like how people can have dominant and nondominant hands, people can have dominant feet as well. This is important because in wakesurfing the dominant foot is used to stop and maneuver. If you’re unsure as to which of your feet is your dominant foot, play around with a soccer ball and see which foot you tend to favor when it comes to kicking the ball. Wakesurfers who ride left foot forward are said to be using a “regular” stance, while those who ride with their right foot forward are using a “goofy” stance. Once you find the correct stance, controlling the board and keeping your balance will become much easier.

Getting Up

The hardest part of wakesurfing is usually getting up on the wake itself. Start off by placing your feet about 18” apart with your rear foot on the back of the board and your front foot in the middle. Grab the tow rope and signal the wake surf boat’s operator to start towing you. Allow the boat to gently pull you to a full standing position and then start finding your balance. You can speed up by putting more weight on your front food, and slow down by putting more weight on your back foot. Turning can be difficult, so apply pressure gently when you decide to maneuver. Wakesurfing isn’t easy, so wait until you’re sure of yourself before dropping the tow rope.
